Meteora

Holy Monastery of Rousanou

Among the towering rocks of Meteora, the Holy Monastery of Rousanou rises as a living testimony of faith and spirituality. A unique refuge of stillness and prayer, where history, architecture and the beauty of nature come together.

The Monastery

A monastic community since the 16th century

Dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Saviour and honouring the memory of St. Barbara, the Holy Monastery of Rousanou was founded in 1545 by the brothers and hieromonks Ioasaph and Maximos of Ioannina.

Built upon a narrow rock that it covers almost entirely, it is among the most characteristic examples of Meteora monastic architecture. Since 1988 it has served as a women's cenobitic monastery.
